The Equality Challenge Unit (ECU) Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) in higher education and research.

After securing the unprecedented double award as University of the Year for both International and Sports in 2019, the 2020 guide recognised the University as the UK's best for Agriculture and Forestry and ranked it in the top 10 best universities for graduate prospects. In 2021 the guide once again awarded us University of the Year for Sport. This year the University is ranked 21st in the overall league table.
